A Confidential Program for Alabama Physicians

Picture
The Alabama Physician Health Program (APHP) provides confidential consultation and support to physicians, residents and medical students facing health concerns related to:

·         Alcoholism
·         Substance abuse
·         Behavioral or mental health issues
·         Physical illness

APHP provides a safe environment where physicians can talk to other physicians about the stress and demands of modern medical practice. Issues often relate to:

·         Stress of managing a practice
·         Coping with a competitive work environment
·         Financial pressures
·         Dealing with administrative burdens
·         Work-family balance

“APHP continues to dedicate itself to the challenge of restoring physicians with substance dependency and behavior health problems to full recovery.”

When a concern arises about an individual practitioner there is usually a desire to take some action to help the physician and protect the public. There is also concern not to overreact and cause undue publicity or damage to the individual's reputation and career. Physician health programs across the nation were created to address this dilemma. By taking a medically oriented rehabilitative, compassionate and confidential approach, physicians can receive competent and thorough evaluation and treatment when indicated. They also receive ongoing support and monitoring. This program works to preserve lives, medical resources, and improve the quality and safety of medical care.
